The Massive Interest In Optimus Prime Toys
| When the Transformers aired in 1984, who would have guessed we would be still talking about a show about human like robots which can transform into cars and planes to save the planet? But what started off as a Weekend morning children's cartoon ballooned into a multi-million dollar franchise over the years. You could potentially say that the success of Transformers may be traced through the progression of the franchise's most famous character, Optimus Prime. Prime In The Beginning Action figures are nothing innovative to the toy industry, and there is little indication these days of the craze slowing any time soon. Optimus Prime toys and other products along those lines, have continued to remain a staple in the toy boxes and Christmas dream lists of little boys since the early eighties. The first Optimus Prime action figure included its own trailer to hitch on to it when Prime was in his truck theme. The rig's front grill plate has since then become synonymous with the "good" transformers of the collection, the Autobots. Casual followers may well not know that the original title for the Prime toy was "battle convoy", but ultimately the name was changed by comic book writer/editor Dennis O'Neil. The standard was now set for the subsequent line of Prime figures. Pre-Millennium Prime Transformers started to adjust during the 90s following a decade-long run at the head of the pack. If you were to look back at the Optimus Prime merchandise, this change becomes slight yet recognizable. The action figures themselves began to sell as non-transformable gadgets oddly enough. Many came with gear like battle platforms and other special features, literally. One model of Prime in 1993 added an LED pulsating fist. Prime also went through what you might call a makeover in the early 90s. One type of toys changed the chief of the Autobot's regular red, white and blue look in favor of a red-black paint job. The change proved to be short lived however since by this time Prime's picture had become identified with the Transformers franchise. The show would even spin off different off shoots of different transformers so that they can keep up with the times and capture new audiences. Prime According to Hollywood Michael Bay's reinvention of the Transformers series came out in 2007, initiating another demographic of youth to the adventures of Prime and his Autobots vs Megatron and the devious Decepticons. Other transformers may have changed their shapes, but Prime remained fundamentally the same Prime which survived the test of time. Other Autobots advanced into the latest models of sports and utility vehicles, but Bay's Prime retained his big rig transforming same at it has been since the eighties, although with the latest CGI special effects.
