Fans of Transformers well remember Transformers: The Movie, which followed on the heels of the wildly profitable kid's animation in the 1980s. Just as as memorable to the Transformers audience is the super-villain of the cartoon film, Unicron, the eater of planets. In spite of this, it was not until 2003 that Hasbro released a Unicron action figure even though the persona was introduced in the mid-80s.

The Original Unicron

Since the second season of the Transformers animated TV series ended, makers of Transformers: The Movie needed a new "bad guy" to carry Transformers to the next level. The solution turned out to be an enormous, planet-sized dangerous robot named Unicron.

Within the plot of Transformers: The Movie, Unicron offered the defeated Decepticon commander, Megatron, new forces and a new body in order to enact Megatron's reprisal on Optimus Prime and the Autobots.

Referred to as the Cybertronian God of Darkness and Chaos, Chaos Bringer and Universal Dominator, the transformer Unicron's true goal had been to get the Autobots out of his way. After Unicron was defeated in the end his head evolved into a new moon on the transformer's home planet, Cybertron, and following that, the Transformers saga continued with Unicron now as a staple villain, but just in the Japanese versions which followed the American cartoons and motion picture. Like great villains though, Unicron was down but not out in the U.S.

The Unicron Trilogy

The makers of Transformers eventually capitalized on their introduction of a new villain, producing what would end up being the Unicron Trilogy: Transformers: Armada, Transformers: Energon and Transformers: Cybertron. You might actually say that Unicron was re-introduced into the storyline, but hardcore fans that kept up with Transformers from the beginning and overseas were no stranger to the character.

The modern transformers Unicron came out in the early 2000s with much of the same characteristics of its original representation. Although in the Unicron trilogy, the planet-sized villain only destroys and absorbs planetary power rather than eating them as the 1980s version could.

Furthermore, the new model of Unicron possessed more nasty qualities and fed off of the carnage of war involving the Autobots and the Decepticons. As a twist in the Unicron trilogy, both groups of the warring transformers placed their difficulties aside and joined forces in order to stop Unicron's plot.

Unicron Action Figures

At first, Hasbro, the manufacturer of Transformers toys, decided to release a Unicron figure to overlap with the release of the movie, however the product was never unveiled. Unicron toys eventually became readily available upon the twentieth anniversary of Transformers: The Movie. Some figures were grouped together as deluxe collector's items with comic books included in the packaging, but keeping up with the youthful, newer viewers too, a number of Unicron designs kept with the Transformers tradition and were suitable for ages five or over.
